New York Nursing CEU Requirements

Nurses in New York are lucky to earn an above-average salary for their services. But earning a nursing degree isn’t enough to keep your job as a nurse in this state. In fact, there are several nursing CEU requirements in New York that you’ll need to meet to keep your license active.

What is a nursing CEU requirement?

CEU stands for continuing education unit. Generally, in the field of nursing, you must earn a minimum number of CEUs every so often to keep your nursing license active. If you fail to meet your state’s requirements, then your nursing license becomes inactive and you can no longer hold employment as a nurse.

Nursing CEU requirements in New York

Different states have different nursing CEU requirements. The nursing CEU requirements in New York are quite a bit different, and much more lenient, than CEU requirements found in lots of other states, many of which require 30 or more CEUs every two to four years.

In New York, you need only complete three contact CEU hours directly related to infection control every four years to maintain an active nursing license.

Important to keep in mind, though, is that you must complete a minimum of two hours of contact hours relating to child abuse and maltreatment identification and reporting when you go through the initial nursing licensing process. Without this training, you can’t go on to renew your nursing license.

If you wish to provide LPN services in the state of New York, you’ll need to meet the three-hour CEU requirement in infection control upon initial licensure as well as every four years. However, you don’t have to obtain child abuse identification and reporting training unless you work in a role that directly involves children.

Nurse Practitioner CEU requirements in New York

Working as a nurse practitioner (NP) in New York means you’ll need to meet the same CEU requirements as registered nurses (RNs) and you’ll also need to uphold any national certification requirements.

If you have a nursing license to prescribe controlled substances, you’ll need to make sure you complete three hours of training in addiction, pain management, and palliative care every three years. You won’t necessarily lose your license to work as a nurse if you fail to meet this requirement, but you will lose your ability to prescribe controlled substances as an NP if you don’t complete the required continuing education training.

How to find CEU courses for nurses in New York

No matter the type of nurse that you are or you’re wanting to become, it’s essential to understand the CEU requirements that you’ll have to meet to maintain an active license. If you perform nursing services under an inactive nursing license, you will face hefty penalties, including possible jail time.
