Position Title: Registered Nurse (RN), $5,000 SIGN-ON BONUS eligible*

Location: Dallas, TX

Reports To: Health Center Manager

Employment Status: Full-Time, Non-exempt

Grade: C-5

* Sign-On Bonus – $2,500 paid out on the first scheduled paycheck following 6 months from date of hire and $2,500 paid out on the first scheduled paycheck following 12 months from date of hire; eligible candidates must remain in the position for a minimum of 1 year (current employees and staffing agency referrals not eligible).


* Provides direct nursing care to clients during the surgical abortion procedure and for recovery care for post surgical abortion period. The RN works in partnership with the Health Center Manager, Clinician, and Physician to provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Participates as a member of a team providing confidential, quality patient services, allowing patients to maintain a sense of dignity, trust and safety. Follows organization protocols, policies and procedures and any center-specific policies and procedures. Ensures productivity expectations, customer service and compliance standards are maintained. Abides by the organization’s mission in performing job duties.

Essential Job Functions & Expectations

* Procedure Room:
* Ensures that any client who requests an abortion is aware that she may change her decision at any time and will be provided with alternatives and will receive accurate information and appropriate referrals.
* Starts and monitors intravenous (IV) injection for administering medication and sedation per agency protocol and physician orders.
* Assists physician in the procedure room. Assist in all aspects of abortion procedure, including performing vital signs and lab work, assisting physician during procedure while being supportive of client, and assisting in recovery room as indicated.
* Notifies physician of any medical problem or other special concerns of client that may relate to the abortion or choice of birth control method.
* May assist in the set-up and clean-up of exam rooms.
* Performs basic ultrasonography for gestational dating after completion of ultrasound training and under the direction of the physician.
* Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician.
* At the end of each procedure day, secures all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage.
* Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs used in the procedure room.
* Recovery Room:
* Provides nursing supervision of the recovery room.
* Monitors clients in the post-abortion recovery room.
* Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician.
* Reviews post-abortion aftercare instructions with client.
* Administers Rhogam to Rh negative patients and discusses scant tissue follow-up as indicated.
* Reviews birth control information and assesses contraindications and risks to oral contraceptives.
* Maintains client statistics to be given to on-call staff.
* Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room.
* Monitors vital signs.
* Monitors patients’ bleeding.
* Removes heplock when patients are stable.
* Recognizes and reports signs of abortion complications to the physician or nurse clinician.
* Informs client of need for post-abortion follow-up.
* Completes appropriate cleanup of the recovery room at the end of each clinic including but not limited to locking up medications, cleaning recliners, emptying trash.
* General duties:
* Practices nursing within the scope of a registered nurse and in accordance with agency protocols and policies.
* Accurately documents patient charts.
* Provides health education for reproductive health issues as needed.
* Consults with organization physician when deviates from standard medical protocols.
* Complies with infection control, safety, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA), and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards.
* Understands and complies with policies regarding patient rights.
* Ensures that informed consent has been obtained before any procedures are initiated.
* Knows and adheres to the requirements of the Woman’s Right to Know Act, parental consent for minors seeking abortion, and the screening and reporting of child abuse.
* Creates and maintains an environment of dignity and safety for patient sensitivity and privacy.
* Provides direct nursing care to clients.
* Provides on-call and health center coverage as scheduled.
* Provides patient management to ensure that patients are provided responsible and efficient care.
* May audit charts to ensure compliance with regulations.
* Ensures that all emergency equipment is available and in proper working order prior to each clinic.
* Understands and complies with all PPGT pharmacy policies, including those related to medication administration and narcotic handling.
* Assists in monitoring medical supply inventory in the recovery room.
* Responds quickly and efficiently during patient care emergencies (e.g. assisting patient to floor if fainting to limit patient injury, immediately calling for assistance and emergency cart, efficiently able to insert IV catheter, performing CPR, if indicated).
* Provides health education for reproductive health issues as needed.
* Completes all employee training requirements including handling of situations involving conduct that endangers the welfare of minors and mandatory reporting requirements.
* Takes personal responsibility to remain informed about family planning methods, abortion issues and technology, policies, protocols, procedures, and services offered at our health centers.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate credentials and certifications.
* Has unrestricted access to client protected health information (PHI) on paper and electronic forms for purposes of treatment, payment, and/or healthcare operations. The use of a client’s protected health information should be limited to information needed for the specific task that is being performed or requested by the individual client. Disclosure of any client information must be for purposes of treatment, payment or healthcare operation OR must be accompanied by a valid authorization.

Minimum Education

* Assoc degree in Nursing or BS in Nursing from accredited institution; BSN desired.

Minimum Experience

* Preferred experience: surgery, abortion, and/or women’s health.

Required Licenses or Certifictaions

* Possess a valid registered nurse license issued by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners or a license issued under a multi-state licensure privilege with another compact state. BLS and ACLS certifications required.

* Must have excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet. Must have the willingness and ability to adapt to change including advances or new technology. Must have excellent customer service skills and be committed to providing the highest level of customer satisfaction.
