Is it true that nursing is a 24/7 profession?

March 22nd, 2023

It depends on what position you have. I have been a nurse for nearly 30 years. I finally found a job I don’t take home with me-meaning, when I leave work, I don’t think about it constantly. I have worked in so many different positions in my career, from hospital bedside nursing, to private duty and Medicare homecare visits. I have taught, done telephone triage, managed group homes and was case manager at a memory care facility. When I worked in the hospital I worked in just about every different specialty. I would dream about alarms in my sleep. I would triage the cat in my sleep. I now work as a discharge planner in the hospital. I personally don’t find it the least bit stressful. The day goes fast, I do my job to the best of my ability and go home. Come back and do it again. I can’t make the staffing shortage or bed shortage go away. All I can do is try to find a safe place for the patients to go. In the meantime, they are safe at the hospital.
