I am looking to transition into a healthcare managerial/admin role as I have realized I do not want to work as a NP. I am a new grad NP but have experience as an emergency room RN. How should I go about this?

Apply to Indeed or other job boards. Sometimes rural hospitals or teaching ones will hire you if you have charge nurse experience. Start as a coordinator or assistant nurse manager.

GO BACK TO WORK AS AN ER NURSE...OR ICU/CCU IF YOU CAN GO IN AS NEEDING GUIDANCE BY THE STAFF..ITS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN AS YOU HELP. THE STAFFING IS SHORT ALL THE TIME....AFTER WORKING A FEW YEARS ON THE FLOORS YOU WILL GAIN THE EXPERIENCE YOU WILL NEED IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE NURSES ON THE FLOORS DOING THE HEAVY "LIFTING"!!! IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO GET THAT BECAUSE YOU ARE MORE EFFECTIVE IN RUNNING THE FLOORS, OR THE DEPARTMENTS!!!ONE OF MY BEST INSTRUCTORS IN THE 3 LEVELS OF SCHOOLS I WENT TO SAID..........YOU NEED A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR AND AN " INCISION "TO BE A GOOD NURSE..... YOU HAVE TO HAVE NEEDED SOMEONE CARING FOR YOU TO KNOW WHAT IT ALL FEELS LIKE TO BE NEEDING HELP BY A NURSE............... AND YOU NEED TO HAVE A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR.......... TO JUST GET THRU YOUR SHIFT IN A GOOD MOOD AND HELP YOUR STAFF MAKE IT THRU...... AND THAT IS SO TRUE!!!!! WE ALL HAD TO LEARN WHAT IT FEELS LIKE SO WE CAN BE BETTER AT WHAT WE ARE NEEDED FOR!!!!! .......L. GRAY R.N.

Start at the supervisor level or charge nurse position. With an MSN degree it will qualify you to both positions. These positions will make you work with the clinical manager and at times fill the responsibilities of the clinical manager. When management positions presents itself you will be at a position to transition to that role. You could always take a position in PACU, ICU, and Medsurg not just ER. You’ll be on your way up the ladder in nursing leadership or perhaps healthcare administration.
