Why do nurses develop compassion fatigue?

January 17th, 2022

My thoughts on compassion fatigue:

Compassion is an invaluable asset to our profession that is not respected and it comes so naturally to many of us that we do not realize we’re running low until we hit the danger zone.

The amount of compassion we give during a shift is disproportionate to the amount of compassion we receive.

Since compassion is an internal value and subjective, there’s no quantifiable measurement to determine how much you have.

(think of the pain scale…we only know how bad a patient’s pain level is based on what they say)

I think it's twofold. There's the unrelenting nature of the human need that we work in the middle of, but also a lack of support from the profiteering arm of the systems we work within work within. Basically we as individuals are expected to absorb whatever comes our way, and the administrations we work under are unwilling to make any accommodation for the toll that this takes on us.
