What education do you give new moms about post partum depression? Does your facility utilize the Edinburgh or another scale?
We educate patients on the signs of PPD and give resources if it occurs when they are home. We administer the Edinburgh to all mothers before they are discharged, if above a 9, we inform their provider and make an appointment to talk to the proper person before they leave the hospital.
yes we use Edinburg at 24 hrs .a score over 10 needs to notify attending and see social work .Upon d/c describe abnormal symptoms and when to call a dr.
I start educating parents right away on PPD and emphasize that dads can get it as well, I assure them they’d never be judged for for speaking up about scary feelings, I remind them they’re not alone and not failing as a mother. We, too use the Edinburg depression scale although in my opinion it could be a bit tweaked.
