Get involved in EMR/EHR and/or IT projects. Volunteer as the super user for upgrades. Set up time to meet with one or a few. Talk to the manager of the department to discuss avenues on how to apply when a position becomes available. I was one, but now I am an IT analyst occasionally and PRN nurse.
There's much more to nursing informatics than EHRs.
Getting involved with your quality improvement department/team can get you some valuable experience in collecting and analyzing data to improve nursing care delivery.
Joining a project team and learning about project management are also beneficial.
