How do I get started as a travel RN? I’ve been an RN for three months but prior, I was an LPN for 13 years. Some recruiters are telling me I need a full year of being an RN before I can travel.

I think it depends on where, and in what capacity you worked as an LPN. If in an acute care setting, that is a bit different than skilled nursing. I personally would not be interested in hiring a brand new nurse as a traveler. My expectation would be that they are experienced (2+yrs) in the area applying for.

I agree with the recruiters. Rn role is totally different from the LPN role. I would question anyone that would hire an RN, as a travel nurse, with just 3 months experience. That would be a liability,

Yes… wait for 1yr. Gain all the experience you need. I know l was ok when l traveled level 1yr trauma hospitals plus rural ones. You’ll be able to handle all the scenarios with limited resources and help. Don’t forget the hospital May or may not give you any orientation. So season urself well the you can take off and travel the whole world… ur the whole world… Dubai too so fun

The one year experience requirement is actually for your own good. Travel nursing can be brutal and the expectation is that you are experienced enough to hit the ground running. Don’t be in a rush- trust me you will be glad you waited and you’ll enjoy your travel assignments more once you are more confident about what expected of you.

Yes, my experience has been that most agencies require at least one year in your area of specialty. However, I would ask if your years as an LPN can be considered, especially if it's in the same area of specialty. Good luck!
