What is it like to transition from medical telemetry nurse to a specialty as a hemodialysis clinic nurse?

I worked dialysis (outpatient) for 7 years. Coming from different areas of nursing, outpatient is the best place to start as dialysis is a totally different animal. I saw nurses from other areas of nursing try to transition into acutes and they were so overwhelmed (and that was after we had trained them in clinic). Your med surg knowledge will come in handy when you encounter issues that overlap with the patient’s renal disease.. but that’s about it. Labs are different, blood pressure is different, and honestly patients are different too. But dialysis is really interesting and you get to really know your patients. Dialysis can be a very rewarding job if you’re interested in it!!

That would be an easy transition as med surg skills are so diverse.
