I have been working as a med surg nurse for 5 ish years. How can I pursue mother baby unit and Persuade the manager to hire me? (Looking to transfer in the same hospital I’m working in)

I would make an appointment with the manager of the Mother/baby unit and tell her your goal of working on this unit. Ask her what you could do to make this come true.

You could try by talking to the manager and see if they have extra hours or call hours in mother/baby where you could help out. Once you get your foot in the door, it is a lot easier. You would have experience in the department and have more value. That would make you eligible for extra training for the department. It is a lot of work but that's the fastest I know.

I was in a similar situation. I spent many years in mother baby and pediatrics after med surg. Having five years med-surge experience is a plus. It makes you more desirable. There can be many events that occur post-partum that will be familiar to you and your assessment skills will be very beneficial. Offer to float to that unit if hospital policy allows. Try to let the manager know how interested in the department and what an asset you would be. Sell yourself! Good luck.

If there is a float pool in your facility that covers mom/ baby that might be an area you could be hired for first, get experience and eventually apply to a FBP position

Where are you located. I am a Nursing Director for a LDRP unit and hire new grads and nurses with experience in other fields. If you are interested and in the area of Mount Airy NC. Come see me and interview with my team!

Go talk to her and apply! Mom/Baby is essentially a MedSurg ward but with very specific patients
