How much time should I work on a unit (such as MedSurg) before I transfer to the ICU?
There really isn’t a magic timeframe…it’s going to be different for every person. I was on a step-down unit for a little over two years before I made the switch. I could have been successful after a year on the ward, but for me the 2 year mark felt right. A lot of my students as me this question and I typically suggest to stick it out for a year. However, there are folks who are successful as new grads in the ICU!
I did 6 months in IMCU as a new grad before transitioning to ICU. Just get your base of knowledge and make the switch!
Depends on you. Are you trying to get into ICU because “we are not have 2 patients” or are you trying to get into the ICU to learn?
Preferably it's good idea to get atleast a year or two on med Surg before transitioning to work in ICU.
