The partner hopefully had nine months to prepare for this moment of delivery. Being the Nurse in the room has its challenges, but remember there are three integral parts to the whole. Mom, baby and partner. Ask them, “What can I do to help you through this”? They will tell you the area(s) where they need help. From there assess and apply your creative skills.

If it’s the dad I always tell them “come in over, you’re 50% of the problem here” so they know I acknowledge their part in this and that they are a vital piece. I’ll teach the support person how to be supportive so they have a purpose in being there and ask them how they are doing along the way, sometimes bringing them drink or a snack.

Do whatever she tells you. Dont try to talk to her during a contraction. Tell her she is amazing. Learn Lamaze breathing.
