Feb 26 2025

CATEGORIES Healthcare Techs

Radiology is a popular specialty in healthcare due to its strong demand, engaging work, and less rigorous educational requirements—radiologic technologist roles typically require an associate’s degree and professional certification.

If you’re preparing for a radiologic technologist interview, you can expect a mix of technical, behavioral, and patient care questions. Employers want to ensure you have the technical expertise needed to successfully perform imaging procedures, and the communication skills needed to work with both patients and the medical team.

Read on for a list of common radiologic tech interview questions for 2025 to help you ace your next interview.

Tip: Our Healthcare Tech Interview Guide offers even more guidance for landing your next tech job, including tips for how to prepare for an interview and even more common questions.

Let's get started
What's your current role?

Technician Technologist Something else

1. Can you describe your experience with imaging equipment and PACS systems?

Your proficiency with the tools of the trade is an essential requirement that employers will want to confirm early on in the interview.

How to answer: Make sure your answer is comprehensive, but keep it clear and concise. Share the types of facilities you’ve worked in, the types of equipment and procedures you’re most familiar with, and the PACS systems you’ve worked with. Be sure to mention your education and any certifications you hold, and finish by sharing what you’re looking for in your next role and why this opportunity is a good fit for you.

2. Why did you choose to become a radiologic technologist?

This question is your opportunity to connect with the interviewer by sharing a more personal side of yourself and what you find fulfilling about your career.

How to answer: Share a personal story about how or why you got into the field, or describe what motivates you and how it would help you thrive in this role. Tie it back to the employer’s mission or values to show you’ve done your homework.

3. What qualities do you think make a successful radiologic technologist and how do you embody those qualities?

For an employer, your soft skills are just as important as your technical skills when gauging your ability to be effective in the role.

How to answer: Choose qualities that reflect different parts of the role, like problem-solving (technical skills), collaboration (teamwork), and empathy (patient care).

4. How do you ensure effective communication with a multidisciplinary medical team?

Radiologic technologists work alongside many kinds of healthcare professionals, from physicians to nurses to radiologists. Employers want to know that you have the communication skills to collaborate successfully with the whole team.

How to answer: Explain the types of teams you’ve worked with before and the role you have played in fostering a healthy work environment. Highlight how you work with teammates who are both your senior and your junior, if applicable.

5. How do you stay up to date with advancements in radiologic technology?

Radiology best practices and technologies are constantly evolving, and employers want to know that you seek out learning opportunities.

How to answer: Share details on any continuing education opportunities or conferences you’ve attended, what you learned from them, and how you’ve incorporated it into your work. If you don’t have a specific experience to share, cite a recent medical journal article or study and what you found interesting about it.

6. Walk me through the steps you take to ensure diagnostic quality imaging while minimizing radiation exposure for both you and the patient.

Employers want to confirm that you have the technical expertise necessary to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

How to answer: Mention any relevant industry-recognized certification or training you have. Talk through each step of your process thoroughly, referencing important aspects of your training such as the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles of radiation exposure, proper patient positioning, and shielding techniques.

7. Have you ever had to handle a miscommunication or conflict with a coworker? How did you handle it?

Your ability to handle and resolve conflict is crucial when working with a medical team.

How to answer: Share an example from your personal experience, but be careful not to speak poorly of your coworkers. Explain the situation calmly and objectively, then share the steps you took to resolve the issue while maintaining professionalism. Finish off with what you learned from the experience.

8. Describe a time when you faced an unexpected issue or equipment malfunction during a procedure. How did you resolve the issue?

This question helps the interviewer gauge your problem-solving skills in a high-pressure medical environment.

How to answer: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to detail what happened, how you identified and resolved the issue, and what you learned. Be sure to mention how you ensured the patient’s safety and comfort during the incident. If you don’t have a relevant experience to share, follow the same formula with a hypothetical situation.

9. How do you prioritize tasks when faced with a high patient volume?

Like most healthcare professionals, radiologic techs must be able to multitask and prioritize. This question helps the interviewer gauge how you handle stressful situations.

How to answer: Share the mental framework you use to prioritize tasks, and if possible, how you’ve employed that framework in a real-world situation. Be sure to share how you coordinate with others on your team or delegate responsibilities, if applicable.

10. Describe how you work with a diverse range of patients, including children and the elderly.

Patient care is an essential part of any radiology role, and different patient populations require a different care approach. Interviewers want to know that you are comfortable and confident caring for all patients.

How to answer: Share how you adapt your approach to ensure the most comfortable experience for your patient. Be sure to reference proper patient positioning and handling techniques where applicable.

11. Tell me about a time when you had to explain a complex procedure to a patient or family member who was anxious or unsure.

Employers want to know that you can show compassion when communicating with patients or family members during what can be a stressful experience.

How to answer: Start by expressing empathy and compassion for the patient. Then explain how you broke down the procedure in a way the patient could understand, and how you provided reassurance to make them more comfortable.
