What is a Healthcare Technologist? Job Duties and How to Become One

CATEGORIES Healthcare Techs

Healthcare technologists are highly trained professionals who play a vital role in diagnosing and treating patients. Working primarily in laboratories and hospitals, they are responsible for performing sophisticated tests and procedures that assist doctors and other healthcare providers in making critical healthcare decisions. Most roles require both a bachelor’s degree and specialized certifications, and offer plenty of growth opportunities for those looking to advance their career in the healthcare field.

In this article, we’ll explore the duties and earning potential of a healthcare technologist, as well as how you can get started in this rewarding field.

What Does a Healthcare Technologist Do?

Healthcare technologists have advanced knowledge and training in how to operate and maintain sophisticated equipment, collect and analyze samples, and interpret test results. They are experts who specialize in critical areas such as radiography, ophthalmology, and nuclear medicine, among many others.

Depending on their specialization, healthcare technologists are responsible for duties such as:

  • Conducting advanced diagnostic tests and procedures
  • Operating and maintaining sophisticated equipment
  • Directly assisting physicians and other providers with complex procedures and analysis
  • Upholding a high standard of care and accuracy of results
  • Training and supervising technicians and assistants

How much do healthcare technologists make?

Salaries vary based on factors like education, certification, specialization, geographic location, and type of facility. They typically earn higher salaries than technicians due to their more advanced training and education. Check out our guide to the many types of healthcare technologists for a detailed look at salaries by specialization.

How to Become a Healthcare Technologist

Complete Your Education

Becoming a healthcare technologist typically requires a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a related field. Many specialties require you to study at an institution accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), often in addition to advanced certification.

Obtain Certification

Certification is highly recommended, and often required, for healthcare technologists. More technical specializations require more advanced training and certification. For example, anaesthesia technologists must obtain a specialized certificate through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), and MRI technologists through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), in addition to more foundational certifications.
