Nurse Salaries / FNP Salary

Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) work with families to create healthcare plans and provide preventative care. They can act much like a doctor, assessing patients’ health, making diagnoses, and even prescribing medication.

While registered nurses in the United States receive $82,750 per year according to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, FNPs are among the highest-paid nurses.  As of May 2021, the BLS reports an average salary for all types of nurse practitioners in the United States at $118,040 – an effective hourly rate of $56.75.

Wage data from Incredible Health on Advance Practice Registered Nurses – which includes Family Nurse Practitioners – indicates a similar result: an average salary of $121,382, or an effective hourly rate of $58.36.

Highest-paying states for Family Nurse Practitioners

In addition to specialty, license, and experience, location also plays a major factor in a nurse’s expected wages – driven by cost-of-living and the overall job market in each area.

For FNPs, California tops the list of highest-paying states with an average annual wage of $151,830. New Jersey comes in at second with an average NP salary of $137,010, followed by New York at $133,940.
