CATEGORIES Nursing Careers

Job stability, personal satisfaction, good salary, and the ability to make a real difference are just a few of the reasons to love being a nurse in Fredericksburg, Virginia. With a critical nursing shortage affecting just about every hospital in the country, nurses can write their own tickets and choose exactly where they want to live and the type of facility where they want to work. If you’re considering your own options, Fredericksburg, Virginia has a lot to offer.

Fredericksburg is an oasis of charm in the middle of the mid-Atlantic region. Offering culture, history, and easy access to both Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, it is one of the fastest-growing towns in the state. Growing families will enjoy Fredericksburg’s good schools and strong high school graduation rate, as well as the many industries that call the town home. Foodies will love Fredericksburg’s many award-winning restaurants, while history buffs will revel in being surrounded by some of the country’s most iconic Civil War and colonial sites.

For nurses, Fredericksburg offers plenty of professional opportunities. The town is home to hospitals ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report, as well as plenty of nursing homes, long-term care facilities, home care services, and nursing schools that are eager to employ qualified registered nurses.

  1. Fredericksburg, Virginia is Home to World Class Healthcare Facilities

Fredericksburg may be a small town, but it is home to big hospitals and nursing opportunities. Mary Washington Hospital is the largest employer in the region and the largest medical center in the area. U.S. News & World Report ranked it the 10th best regional hospital in Northern Virginia and 5th best in the Washington, D.C. metro area. It includes a Level II Trauma Center and is part of Mary Washington Healthcare. Fredericksburg is also home to Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, which U.S. News & World Report ranked as high performing in three adult procedures and conditions.

For registered nurses interested in working in specialty care and outpatient settings, two of Sentara Pratt Medical Center’s six campuses are located in Fredericksburg. This multi-specialty group offers patients access to Cardiology, ENT, Family Practice, Gastroenterology and Nutritional Counseling, General and Vascular Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics, as well as laboratory and radiology services.

Perhaps most exciting of all is the way that healthcare is growing in the region. Fredericksburg has seen two new hospitals open in the last several years, and Mary Washington Healthcare is partnering with telehealth company Caregility to launch a virtual nursing program in town. The area also offers nurses the opportunity to work in specialty clinics, a VA clinic, urgent care centers, surgery and rehabilitation centers, and acute care and long-term nursing facilities.

  1. Nurses in Fredericksburg Have Access to a Top-Level BSN Program Close at Hand

Registered nurses who choose to live in Fredericksburg have the opportunity to complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing at nearby University of Mary Washington. The school’s nearby BSN Completion Program is specifically geared towards nurses who have earned their Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited university, college, or diploma nursing program. Courses are available on both full-time and part-time schedules, and many classes are available to take online.

Nurses who are interested in earning Advanced Practice Registered Nurse credentials are within one hour of some of the best nursing graduate programs in the country in Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.

  1. Fredericksburg Nurses Receive Generous Compensation, Sign-on Bonuses, and Solid Benefits

Registered nurses are very much in demand everywhere, and Fredericksburg is no exception: the national nursing shortage has affected the town’s hospitals and care facilities, and they’ve responded by offering nurses generous compensation packages. According to Salary.com, the average registered nurse in Fredericksburg earns $93,288, and many facilities are offering sign-on bonuses of $5,000 to $10,000. Fredericksburg’s hospitals know that nurses are seeking supportive work environments that offer the opportunity for advancement and career success, and in response to that they provide benefits including tuition reimbursement, flexible scheduling, and even relocation assistance.

  1. Economic Advantages of Living in Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg, Virginia is the fastest growing market in Virginia, and for good reason. According to bestplaces.net, the job market has increased by 1.9% over the last year, and job growth is expected to increase by 37.8% over the next ten years. At the same time, the cost of doing business in Fredericksburg is lower than in many other areas, and that, combined with its strong transport links and accessibility to major cities and markets along the East Coast, is attracting new industries and startups.

With its location on the Interstate 95 corridor midway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, the town has attracted highly educated residents and some of the top companies in the world, including GEICO and DHL. Residents enjoy a sales tax rate that is lower than the national average.

  1. Quality of Life for Nurses in Fredericksburg

No matter how dedicated you are to your career, your quality of life outside of work is essential to your wellbeing and happiness. Fredericksburg, Virginia offers a world of opportunity and exploration. Its proximity to the nation’s capital and historic landmarks is just the start: Fredericksburg’s easy access to Washington Dulles International, Washington Reagan National, and Richmond International airports means ease of travel to wherever you want to go and for loved ones to visit you from anywhere in the world.

The town is surrounded by natural beauty and recreational opportunities, with the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Chesapeake Bay to the east, plus water enthusiasts can enjoy close proximity to Lake Anna, one of Virginia’s largest lakes.

Add to that the wide range of cultural activities, shopping, and entertainment options available in the area, and it’s easy to see why Fredericksburg is a wonderful place to be a nurse.
