Race is not supposed to be used in modern eGFR calculations. It used to be that Black patients' eGFR was calculated using a different formula, but that was found to not be accurate or helpful. It is considered racist and inaccurate now to use the old formulas. Incidentally, the strange "one drop rule," still widely used in the US to classify people as minorities---by self-identification as well---would make the calculations totally worthless for most people who are classified as Black in the US. I just noticed in a 5-second search that some online formulas still ask for self-reporting as Black, but that is an anachronism that is not used in official calculations by nephrologists. ---CNN here
