How often should an IV site be changed to prevent infection?

August 30th, 2023

Ever hospital has a different policy, & the CDC doesn’t give an exact time.
If there are no signs of infection, a peripheral IV should be changed every 5 to 7 days. There are some exceptions, for example if the patient is a very difficult stick, he would want to keep that site as long as possible. Meticulous care of the site and scrub the hub every time it is accessed!

If the patient had the IV inserted in the field, you would want to change it as soon as possible, as they are often inserted under less than ideal conditions.

I work in two facilities, by policy, it's q96 hrs. Typically by day 4, we are knocking on the doors and ringing bells for the midline. If pt is on more then one pressor, then it gets a central line within start of the pressor.
Hope that helps .

Also, PICC lines are not changed every three days. A PICC is intended to be a long term intervenous device, and can be left in place for many weeks. These also require meticulous site care as well as following your facilities protocols for changing IV tubing, scrubbing the hub before each access, and doing dressing changes.

Usually a pic is changed Q3 daysbit if the dressing is not intact or side is painful while flushing or red.....I would change it right away.
