In your opinion, what does it take to be a great Emergency Department Nurse?

A great ER RN has the ability to do everything from the CNA job to the HN job and everything in between. No attitude that anything is above them. Being a friendly RN. Know your limits and are willing to admit them. I loved doing pediatrics ER. I was okay in the Adult ER and tried to learn more to improve my critical Adult skills with classes. But I also asked my coworkers for info/help. Work in the area that you dislike the most will improve your knowledge

Critical thinking and the ability to rapidly identify issues with your patient. As well as being able to prioritize

Attitude is everything. Take the job seriously but keep your sense of humor. Learn everything u can, pursue advance degrees. Be compassionate and patient, keep the patient and family #1. Check in with your boss and gain feedback on how ur doing and what u can do to improve. Be a team player.
Follow Policy and procedure. If u believe a policy needs improvement, be a change agent and go through prope channels to change and improve ,
People will admire u for this.

IMO, to be an awesome ER nurse, you must have a strong foundation in nursing knowledge.

That knowledge will come full circle with experience, either with experience in the ICU or the medical floor.

This was the case with me and I’m fully aware that no two nurses are created equal.

However, there is a steep learning curve for the new grad nurse in the ER.

If you’re given the opportunity to work in the ER as a new grad, then all power to you! Keep an open mind and be adaptable. It will take some time to adjust and polish your skills but if you have a great team, then I’m sure you won’t be alone.

But if you have any experience as a nurse in the ICU or any other floor, then rest easy. You’ll be dealing with drips and IV medications. Your skill set will include IV starts, blood draws, NG/foley insertions, and more code blues than you’re used to 😅

Whatever path you choose, always, and I mean always, be willing to learn
