When would you use a PEG tube vs an NG tube?

October 9th, 2023

From my experience as an emergency room nurse, med surg. telemetry nurse, LTAC nurse ICU nurse, I believe that the NG tube is used in the acute setting that means that you have to get in and give your medications or assist with the patient eliminating certain drugs or toxins in the stomach or GI tract for a short period of time most of the patients may have an active GI bleed, nausea or extensive vomiting. Or may just simply be unconscious and to protect the airway so there's no aspiration into the lungs
So the NG tube is very valuable in the acute care setting, OR etc
. The NG tube itself can cause local tissue destruction in the nose and the Nair as well as on the inside of the stomach lining itself Because of the or the way the abrasive material that the NG tube is made of. There's always a potential local irritation,so that's one reason or rationale for short-term use of the ng tube. They do have NG tubes that are used for longer periods of time, the short-term use of NG tubes are usually the preference. The peg tube or g tube can be used for continuous feedings , or it can be used to deliver continuous feedings and medications. Also, peg have separate valves for various areas of delivery throughout the g.i.tract. in long-term usage for patients with chronic conditions or permanent neurological conditions, such as CVA or head trauma who are unable to take in the proper caloric intake. Also the long-term effects of the pig are minimal to the skin. The peg does not really erode the skin surface area it can cause some local irritation but it's very minimal versus the local irritation given through the NG tube The peg is direct access to the stomach initially without any risk or minimal risk of aspiration if the patient is unable to swallow or chew on his own.. So that's basically the difference that I see
Pegs and ng tubes are used extensively.
