Returning to floor nursing after 4 yrs of only CM. Where should I start?
Med-Surg is a great start...let's you get your feet on the ground and the variety patients will really help. Start looking at CME and Seminars on the same, it will greatly increase your confidence. Your experience as CM will be very useful to your fellow staff.
Good Luck...Louanne
If it was me, I would start with Med surg, you will get a variety of cases/patients, and remind your supervisor you are needing to reorient to this type of scenario again, so as to minimize patient load. If you have a CNA, rely on her for help, they can be extremely helpful! :-) Good luck! Maybe look into CM at the hospital? Great field for travel after you become proficient!!
I agree to apply to your area of interest. If med surg is not an interest for you then you will not be happy there. You will get the orientation and training you need to be successful on whichever unit you choose.
Although med/surg is a great place to start because you will receive a wide range of disease processes and learn a lot, I would recommend starting in an area which you are interested: respiratory, cardiac, renal, etc. No matter where you get hired, you will receive training to get your skills back to where they need to be. In addition, if you begin in the specialty you were in, it's like riding a bike. everything will come back to you. Good luck.
