How can I ensure a urinary catheter doesn't cause a UTI in my patients?

July 25th, 2023

Start with this question if already inserted: "do they need it?", if they don't, remove it.

If you have to do a catheterization: Sterile procedure to insert, catheter care at least BID and after a BM, teach patient's to do cares themselves, monitor for symptoms.

Well, you can't. Studies have shown that pathogens travel up the catheter on the exterior as well as through the catheter itself. Best is to follow sterile procedure in insertion then protocol for emptying the collection bag and when to change it. If you break sterile procedure in insertion, throw everything away and get a new kit. Physicians are aware of the risk and should only be prescribing in cases of urinary retention and not just for incontinence.
