What's the difference between PICU and NICU nursing?

May 5th, 2024

NICU service line is primarily premature infants or full term infants secondary to birth injuries or physiologic issues. NICU nurses develop strong relationships with their pts and families. The pts can be critical requiring high tech support to a baby who’s on the track home!
A lot of support and teaching is part of nurse role !
PICU pts can be infant to young adult .You will see everything in a PICU, trauma, sepsis etc. Like your NICU colleagues working with families goes hand in hand for caring for the pt.
Both ICUs are challenging and rewarding !
I did both!

Neonatal ICU is only neonates. Can be born from 22 weeks gestation and up depending on the level of NICU the hospital may have. My NICU is a level III NICU, and we have babies born from 22 weeks gestation to term.

Pediatrics can be from a year old to, I believe, 17 or 18 years old. The age range is very wide.
