Is pediatric home health a good starting point for a new grad RN?

It It can be very rewarding but I think all nurses should start at bedside after graduation. You learn so much. So many skills, so much hands on. Even if peds is your thing, start at the bedside. Home care can be so great, establishing relationships with families. If you feel you can cope with some very difficult situations and complicated cases, go for it. It would be providing a great community service..

No, because you are alone with a chronically ill child all day. Ventilators, tracheotomies, g-tubes, medical devices, seizures ect…They do train you on the equipment, but it’s not as thorough as what you get on the floor, plus you have seasoned nurses around on a hospital unit that you can trouble shoot with. Plus insurance reimbursement is low for pediatric patients. That means low hourly wages and sometimes no mileage reimbursement.

I tried out home health as a new grad and I liked it! The only issue for me was the charting. There is so much to chart and without an actual training program it was difficult. I would recommend going with a company that will invest in you and provide you with that training.

No. Home health is great, however as a new grad you should start in the hospital setting. Once you get your bedside skills down (assessments, time management, interventions, ect) home health will be much easier.

I would think experience would be needed. As a former home health nurse i found situations that required immediate judgement & actions which would be based on Experience. Remember to protect your liscence.
