What is the best thing about being a labor and delivery nurse?
Sharing what is rewarding about being a midwife /OB/GYN and L&D nurse for 13 years would take more than a statement.
The true reward is seeing the joy on the parent’s faces as they meet their child for the first time. However, I will briefly say, having the privilege to provide
education in theory and practical activities to pregnant mothers and their significant other,s beginning with prenatal to the postpartum phase,
anticipated a successful delivery outcome. Usually, everyone remembers their L&D nurse as their source for information, advice, support, and encouragement
which makes me an unforgettable cheerleader.
Seeing a delivery after a patient has had an issue with infertility or several miscarriages
Oh and my daughter just transferred from ICU to L&D. She L O V E S it!
It is always so special seeing the birth of a beautiful baby. Each day is a new day with a new experience or a new lesson to be learned. Never boring unless no patients on the unit. I just loved working in L&D, NICU. Best part of my career.
I haven't been a Labor/ Delivery nurse but I had a few cohorts from my nursing school choose that specialty. From some conversations, it seemed that they loved taking care/ preparing the mother's for a (usually) joyous occasion. That's gotta beat working in the ICU / Med Surg. Usually the joyous occasion is discharging a patient lol.
