In NY you will get ONE remnder. Do it then and don't delay. Now it's all done online anyway. Additionally in NY the FIRST time you renew you will have to show proof of taking a "Recognition of Child Abuse" class. Local colleges give them, and you can do them online in Nursing CEU sites. Upload the certificate or mail it in. You only have to do this once, and then list the certificate # every time you renew thereafter, so kep the certificate for reference.
In California they are starting to send reminders but that wasn’t always the case. your employer should be tracking this and letting you know when it getting on that time
you have to go through a State board association or a faith based Association, then maybe it can be through your country or then an organization association. ANA and AANP is a good one from USA.

In my experience I have received a reminder from my nursing board that it was time to renew my license. However, I
wouldn't depend on that because it is your responsibility to renew it on time. It my very in some states, but you can
usually renew your license a little early.
In most states you have to have at least 20 CEUs and you can renew it online. Go to your Board of Nurses website and
there should be information on how to renew it online.
