Full time hours in my Er were 3 12 hr shifts per week. I worked 7a to 7p. I usually worked 4 shifts per week to get OT pay, and some nurses would work 5-6 12 hr shifts per week. Hard to do as you get older.
I currently work as an RN in a Critical Access hospital in the ED. My hours are typically 12.5-13 hours a day. Depending on the day, and staffing, I may get a break to go grab food from the break room, other days it’s good if I get to pee. Because of the circumstances in which I work, there may be days that I work up to 16 hours because there’s no coverage, or a patient is crashing during shift change and it takes both day and noc shift to work it. There is commonly only 2 nurses each shift in here in our ED, just so you can understand why that may occur. In here we are the nurse, respiratory , housekeeping, and whatever other ancillary staff you may need. Stabilize and ship.
