Hello, Thinking about a career in the Nurse Corps, either airforce or army? Does anyone have any experience as a military RN? What are some pros and cons and what is the exact process of joining?

My first 5 years of my 42 year career was with the USAF. Started as a corpsman then RN. The structure is military. Much less political than civ world.

Also less pressure on profit. Doctors have their place and can't pull admin strings by threatening or being recruited away. Can't threaten nurses either as easy in civilian world.

Corpsman were like lvn's back then. Started IV's and gave medicines. They had your back.

Best of all you were appreciated by the patients. Looking back...I should have stayed in. Civilian RN's tend to eat their young.

I actually wanted to do that but was torn doing it. I think I may be past the age now to join. I think it’s a wonderful idea and you should go for it if you can 😊

There are pros and cons to being in the service. You go in as an officer (must have a 4 year degree) and gain rank based on time. You do have to meet height and weight requirements and pass a physical fitness test twice a year. The Air Force is a bit pickier about who they take in. The Army has instituted a fellowship program for new nurses to expose them to various departments such as ED, medical-surgical, mother-baby, etc. You will have a time obligation of at least 4 years, usually 8. You will attend Officer Basic Leadership Course at Ft. Sam Houston and then move on to your first duty assignment which could be stateside or OCONUS (overseas). Assignments typically last 2-3 years. If you are interested, you can reach out to either an Army or Air Force Healthcare recruiter. Here are the websites: https://recruiting.army.mil/mrb/

I did 10 years as US Army Reserve Nurse. Best of luck to you!
