What are some decent places to work in upstate NY? I am a NYC RN with 5 years experience in neurology stepdown, and I am relocating to the Woodstock area in a few months. Ideally would like to work a non-bedside job. Thanks in advance!

Compared to NYC, Upstate pay sucks. I relocated from the Bronx to Poughkeepsie a couple of years ago and was trying to find work closer to home because of the 1.5 hr commute down to the city. Even looked up in Albany. I ended up sulking it up and doing the commute. I would suggest looking into WFH positions at your current hospital system or with insurance companies. Centene, BCBS/Elevance, UHC are some that are hiring. Good luck to you.

NY is huge (as you know), and “Upstate” is super generalized. I’m from “Central” and when I looked up where you’re going, I’d barely even consider that “Upstate,” which is all about perspective—you’re coming from NYC so literally everywhere can be considered “Upstate.” Of course, this isn’t some genius answer, just pointing out it may help you to be more specific in searches is all.

Don’t know a massive amount about the area you’re headed to but obviously public health is big, home care is expanding & case management is booming! You’re not going to be far from Albany area… some of their hospitals may have clinics or other sorts of reach that heads into your new territory.

Good luck!

All I know Upstate don’t offer good pay. I work in the Bronx and know nurses who live upstate and come down to work in the city because of huge difference in pay. My coworker rents a studio, works 5-6 shifts in the row and goes back upstate.
She said even with the rent its better than working around Albany are and etc.
