How does a RN start a position in LnD? I have almost two years experience in medsurge as well as my BSN but no previous LnD experience outside of school.
Some hospitals offer new to specialty programs in which you can get trained in labor and delivery. Teaching facilities with Labor and Delivery units will train an ambitious, trainable nurse. Talk to the nurse manager at your facility and inform them you are interested.
Our hospital offers L/D jobs to new grads with our RN residency program and we have recently hired nursed with no L/D experience from the ICU after Covid to avoid loosing the nurses all together. Depending on location it is worth a shot to apply.
Find a position that offers an internship type program
If that is what you want, keep looking and make your passion for it visible. Join AWOHNN, take whatever shift is offered
Quick answer is to just ask. Ask for the opportunity to shadow. Get to know the staff in L&D as well as the manager. Ask what you can do to make yourself an asset to the department.
Your med- surg experience will be very helpful to you in L&D. If your hospital has L&D, apply for any vacancies posted. If there are none at present, or are infrequent, make an appointment to discuss your interest with the nurse manager. Be prepared for a steep learning curve. When you meet, stress your strengths and what you have learned on your present unit, what you can contribute to the L&D team. Touch base frequently. I would not hesitate to apply....that is how you will get experience. I might add, some L&D units do not have frequent turnover in staff, so be patient, but also look at other hospitals in your area.
Good luck!
