How can I keep track of the different sutures and needles during a procedure?

August 17th, 2023

As a circulator, I always organize my suture in a sideboard or some other area. Always try to keep an eye on the field and notice if more suture are needed, or even ask if more suture are needed. There will always be times when you need a suture that you don’t t immediately have available. One lesson that learned early on is never being just one. Bring a backup. That goes for other items also. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I usually organize them in the order of use. Of course, the smaller needles are usually used first then to the larger needles, basing again on the kind of vessels/tissues where they are used.

As a scrub if there are too many different types of sutures to keep track of, I use a suture counter and write the different suture types in the counter with a sterile marking pen. It helps to repeat back which suture is being handed off as well so when you get it back you remember where it goes in your counter. Its important to stay as organized as possible!
