Is it hard to get a home health job as a new grad?

August 5th, 2022

Home Health requires that you use a lot of clinical judgment and you are working independently. This requires a solid med surg background. Not saying you cannot get a job as a new grad, but you would benefit from a year of 2 to get good assessment skills, iv skills, etc.
Good luck!

Most long term care facilities require at minimum 1 year of experience. Very few have new grad orientation program.

My experience was that it was not hard to get a home health job as a new grad - because the turnover is so great, agencies in my area are always desperate for nurses. But I agree with the previous comment that it's not really a good idea. I did it, and I eventually became very good at it. But my development as a nurse was painfully slowed by not having other nurses in the same building to learn from.

Nursing school really doesn't teach you to BE a nurse, or at least mine didn't. It gave me the background knowledge I needed on order to learn how to be a nurse. Most people are then trained, unofficially or officially, by other nurses, on the job. Home health doesn't work like that. You get a few days shadowing someone who hopefully has more experience, and then you're on your own. You don't even really know what interventions are appropriate for home health yet, and you're probably not super solidly confident on your skills.

There's nothing more terrifying than sitting alone in your car trying to remember how to place a Foley while watching YouTube instructional videos. 😬

Can it be done? Sure. If you're really dedicated and fairly smart and good at research... and it helps to have friends who are more experienced nurses that you can call to talk you through things. But it's really hard, and it will slow down your career considerably.

It all depends where you live as some agencies now have a new graduate program in the home health field, I know at least one of my employers does it is fairly new to them I live in TX but this one has offices in quite a few states.
