How soon is too soon to leave a first nursing job? I work on a unit with unsafe ratios, management that is never supportive, and just unhealthy all together. Every nurse I've worked with is trying to leave or in the process of doing so.

Here’s perspective….I left my first nursing job due to unsafe working conditions where I didn’t feel I could protect my patients OR my license. I’d say of you’re checking those boxes the question of “too soon” are irrelevant.

If you feel unsafe and you believe your license may be in jeopardy leave NOW. You can't practice anywhere without a valid license, so don't risk losing what you worked so hard to earn. In this nursing shortage, you will e hired someplace better.

If you feel that your license is in question, then leave. But make sure you've reached out to management. I feel that they sometimes get that unsupportive rap, when that is not the case. My last unit manager was mean, but supportive. He was not going to be your friends. He was extremely rude at times, and said some pretty HR questionable things. But, if there was a problem that concerned safety, he was willing to listen and would attempt to address it as quickly as possible. A lot of people refused to go to him about issues, and when things escalated and brought to his attention, it was addressed promptly and actions were implemented. Not saying that's the case in your circumstance, but I would reach out first.

Also, a paper trail is always an excellent thing to have.
