How can I get a nursing job at age 73. I love nursing but took time off to get treatment for stage 1 minimally invasive breast cancer every thing is ok now according to my oncologist . Im worried that because of ageism I might not get hired.
I got my BSN at age 69.....teaching is my passion....keep on learning as you and your experience have a lot to contribute....
Thinking of getting my master's...and I'm 86
Long as you are still competent to do nursing still, and don't struggle to get out of bed, I would hire you, this new generation of nurses do not think this way, so good luck and may God bless you with the job you deserve, after all, he is the one who gave you this gift, so don't let any man or women tell you what you can't have.
Ageism is always a factor when applying. To get back into nursing I would consider home care first and also hospice care. I don’t know how fit you are after cancer treatment so easing yourself into the job market might be the way to go.
Ageism is very much present and alive. Unfortunately
Hell im 70 and still kicking it! Best suggestion is to NOT LOOK your age.
I go in full of confidence and I am proactive during the interview. I can still show enthusiasm and I bring a sense of humor with me. I have the attitude, I will make a contribution to your company and we will both benefit from the experience.
You too can ROCK IT!
Try case management with an insurance company. I work from home at 67 and my age isn’t an issue.
Go for it. Experience counts!!
Private duty nursing in the home!! When I directed home care, the older nurses were the BEST! They were strong patient advocates, remained out of any family drama, communicated very well, and rarely called out. My very best nurse was 73 yrs old and amazing! There is such a shortage of PDN nurses that you can call the shots! For instance, no lifting or no nights, or only part time! Go for it, you will be welcomed and put to work asap!!
How long you have been out has alot to do with getting a job. Also the entire nursing community is aging particularly operating room as well as other specialties. I am 65 and disabled and get offers everyday. Good luck to you my friend. They still need us !
Good theory and experience are fine. They cutting back to one nurse but the 72yo nurse was not fast. The supervisor was wondering the reason I was always pleasant and working her. She was slower but kept a med line going so I could do diabetics, emergencies, EKGs and stuff. I loved her. The sup wanted her BP and it was about 178/?. She held a good position and we survived well. This older nurse was good with accountability and functionality; all good.
They left two nurses as shite became crazy for one nurse. Functional nurse, seventies or such; glad to have you on the team.
Do not want to work in New England States as some cops and courts are immature, uneducated terrorists that cause trouble, no matter first responder or not. Courts & Cops breaking the peace in MA.

Nurses are in such demand that I’m sure you’ll find a job. Also age is what you have going for. You likely have a lot of experience. It is not nursing experience, life experiences give you wisdom a younger nurse likely doesn’t have. I encourage you to pray; ask the Lord to lead you to the place He desires you to work.
I don't think you should have difficulty getting a job as long as you are realistic in what you are physically ready for. Just say the gap was time off for personal reasons and if they push, say you were taking care of a family member. In most markets, there are a lot of staff jobs because so many people got a taste of higher wages while traveling. Don't be too picky but sell yourself on your experience and knowledge. And don't sell yourself short. I might consider the first acceptable job offered, and but keep looking for the one you really want. Assuming you are a good nurse, someone will recognize your value...regardless of you specialty. Good luck.
Also check for hospitals doing walk in interviews. Those tend to get offers to you quicker. Be patient because even though they need nurses, HR seems to take forever to call back for an interview.
Only one way to find out. Update your resume and send it to a place where you would like to work. I would think places would be happy to hire you, because of your years of experience. Good Luck in your job search.
Experience tells a lot in nursing! Coping with updates, upgrades in technology could be challenging, appropriate exposure would resolve issues.
Good Evening
Just apply you will never know what the future holds for you.
There are other clients who prefer working with more mature caregivers.
Wish you well.
Kind regards
This is a untrue statement. where did this come from.
Never give up - We are all getting younger not older
-Just do not tell the company you are working with, yet take out the company insurance to pay bills for all emergencies in the onboarding process of pre employment.
It's real.
