How do you give a good nursing report?

March 22nd, 2023

Keep it concise.

1-2minutes to report on an uncomplicated patient is a sufficient amount of time; 2-3 minutes for a more complicated case.

Report exceptions to WNL or deviations from baseline, report notable issues/events, and report communications with physicians and ancillary staff that are noteworthy.

If it can be found in the EMR I generally don’t care to hear about it during a bedside report, and I generally won’t include those details in a bedside report UNLESS it’s a new/float/travel nurse and they haven’t had time to view the
EMR and notes, an/or a more detailed report would make their r shift easier and benefit the patient.
