What sorts of issues to older nurses start to experience after years on the job?

February 21st, 2023

There are so many, I'll address one. The science advances, there are new ways of doing things much better (efficiency, results, patient satisfaction), but the policies and procedures do not reflect these advances, so the experienced RN is forced to bow down to "old ways of doing things". As my years on the job went on, I became more and more efficient, knowledgeable, versatile, and less tolerant of "others" having power over me.
We, the nurses constantly advance in "What serves the patient's best interest NOW?" and our advocacy roles, but the organizations are usually much slower. I've been advocating for policies and procedures changes for many years, and I've often obtained approval from the charge nurses for doing things in better ways. These requests are becoming more and more frequent as the "old ways" are difficult to upgrade.
So, we, older nurses are becoming better and better advocates for our patients, colleagues and the profession, but the advocacy channels require career changes to access (sit on panels for policy changes, participate in political meetings and rallies, etc., none of which I'm interested in.
