Is periop 101 worth it? Do you need it to be successful in the OR?

Periop 101 is a great program it gives a solid foundation in the OR! I was a paramedic once I got my RN wanted to to to the OR, needed a change, and the periop program I went through helped me a lot!!! Usually it takes about 6mos and a little longer if you implement scrubbing.

Thanks

Peri-op 101 is helpful and worth it. You don’t need it to be successful in the OR if you have good preceptors and good education program. But if the work the education along with peri-op 101 it is much better.

The program is worth the cost. Like any program you get out of it what you put in. The best part of the program is that it tells you the 'Why?" using evidence and not "word of mouth"reason which is because "We have always done it that way". I was a Director of Surgical Services for over 20 years and I can say that the staff that used the PERIOP 101 system advanced quicker to being productive team members than the OJT method. They also became better preceptors for the incoming new grad staffing using the PERIOP 101. Success breeds Success.

I absolutely believe periop 101 is worth it bc as a student, most people won’t get experience the OR and it is definitely a different animal.

Yes, it will provide u with a “Foundation”. I was a RNFA, Hospital Based Full Time, Trauma Call at another Hospital & Private Practice RNFA. We had a Training Program for RN’s from say Med Surgery to Transition to the OR. They struggle initially, but in the End, make Very Good Periop RN’s. There is a great deal of Non Nursing in the OR, connecting equipment, Troubleshooting Equipment, Getting this & That. In my Experience, I’ve seen RN’s Loose their ability to do things such as Calculating Drug Dosages or being Familiar with various Medications, just because their OR Role is so much Technical.

The more you have the better it is for you and depends on what the employer is looking for

I learned on the job 45 years ago, but things have changed. Educational programs are always helpful

In my opinion PeriOp 101 is definitely worth it. However, it’s much easier if the instructor or educator has experience tracking the course. It’s not impossible with a” not so good “ educator but definitely easier to navigate. The hospital I went to offered it as a training program and covered the cost fully.

If you are going to be in a hospital it would be better to go through the program especially if you’re a new grad. In a surgery center it’s just as helpful but not as necessary. Hope this helps.
