Why do states have so many continuing education requirements? Do you think they're really necessary?

Education is never-ending. Nursing is dynamic and we add to the body of nursing knowledge all the time. As more and more discoveries occur, our profession must change with them in order to deliver cutting edge care. Imagine basing your care on the nursing standards of 40 years ago. Or imagine basing infection control policies on pre-Covid protocals. Just like the CPR course updates the material every few years based on new research, we update and change nursing education based on the same thing. YES. Continuing edcation is essential to keep your practice current so you can deliver the highest quality care. It is also important because you will be aware more readily of any changes in law that may affect your practice and therefore your license.
