You really need to know what your calling is. I started in an adult ICU , although neonatal was my passion. On hospital declined me as I did not have neonatal experience. The second hospital I went to I was hesitant although they had a great unit manager who quelled my doubt and I stayed for 20 years. There were critical times, quiet times, newborns who were experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome and then those who succumbed to devasting illnesses. I had times when I cried, laughed and made friends with parents. Emergency Departments can be fast paced or slow. What I have personally seen is that many individuals use the ED as their primary physician so the departments become flooded with "not so ill patients." Look at all the specialties there are, do some research and make an informed decision. I hope this was not too much , it helps and best of luck.
