How hard is it to get into mother baby as a new grad nurse? Every hospital I apply to says to start med surg and then transfer into it.

Many hospitals prefer a year of med-surg for new grads in order for them to sharpen their skills, gain the knowledge that only comes from practicing on a unit/floor, and make basic nursing procedures routine. After that, they have a sound foundation for a developing a specialty. Look for hospitals that have internships for new grads in specialty areas. Also be aware that most hospitals have policies offering job openings to nurses already in the employ of the institution. Consider well-baby clinics or pediatric out-patient facilities, either free-standing or attached to a health care system. Or consider out-patient nursing for an obstetric practice. (P.S.The year in med-surg will make you more valuable in this job market.)
