Nurse living in California highly debating moving out of state for family/cost of living. Worried about cut in pay, loss of benefits, not as much support in hospitals. Anyone else done this and how did you adjust?
Yes. However, I was at end of my career and made a lot of money in California working hard when I was younger and lived conservatively until we moved. I have some years left before I decide to retire, but I really like what I am doing now. I took a big cut in pay, but the cost of living is a lot less than California. So you need to factor all these things in before you move. In addition you will need to obtain nursing license from the state you plan to move to etc. and may want to consider the mortgage rates now. If you own your home and your mortgage rate is 3% or less, you may be better off at least for now staying since mortgage rates currently are over 7% for a 30 year fixed. I recommend doing your due diligence prior to moving. Hospitals usually compensate, same kind of benefits, your experience, years of nursing, and degree. ASN, vs BSN, vs MSN, PHD . Hope this helps and good luck!
