Many hospitals offer Perioperative residency programs, it would be a great place to start. Good Luck!

Indeed.com and ziprecruiter.com you can search for "Remote RN" positions in the search bar. Insurance companies are another option as they hire nurses for roles in their organizations try Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigma etc.

Look on the insurance website for remote jobs. Look at sites like Elevance, United Health, Cigna and Humana. Go to nurse networking events talk to other nurses about remote jobs. There is a lady on LinkedIn that says that she can help nurses to get remote jobs. She has some classes available, as well. Go to Virtual Vocations, they may have some jobs for nurses that are remote. Keep looking. Type in Telephonic triage jobs in google. Best wishes

Ask the department to get into a surgical residency. No one wants you to leave the place of employment. Your hospital should want to support their staff.

Apply at a smaller hospital. Your big teaching centers will likely hire experience nurses because they have more people to chose from. If you can, find out the email of the hiring manager and reach out directly. I have hired a few people who reached out directly because recruitment didn't forward the resume.
Good luck.

Get in touch with the OR Nurse Educator via your Nurse Manager or Educator and ask them to arrange for you to do a shadow day in the OR.

The question was how to transition from an OR nurse to a dialysis nurse?
I have been in nursing since 1975. I have worked in MANY arenas because I loved learning a new role as a nurse. Then I would begin to want to try a new position in another speciality. Always applied where there would be training and a good orientation. Go for it..........all of the areas that you work in will only enhance your skills and expertise. You will always incorporate all your knowledge into your new role!! And you will be an expert in many areas, has been so exciting for me!!

Contact the unit manager and see if you can either observe/shadow for a shift in the OR. The beauty of this is you get out there and network, meet people from other specialties and really find out if this could be a good fit for you

Research nursing roles for insurance companies, home health nursing or administrative nursing. Learn about the company and see if it’s a good fit for what you’re seeking.

If you have less than 6 months experience or a recent grad your best path would be to go into a student residency program in a hospital. These programs tend to have openings in those areas and they hire new nurses and train them. Once you are in with the residency program and comply with their rules, then you will eventually end up in that career path. If you have a yr experience then you’d have a more challenging time going into that area due to experience.

As I see it, you have two options. You can look for a job at a surgery center or private practice that will train you for that particular specialty. Additionally, you can also apply for positions at hospitals. Operating Room nurse, new graduate positions are out there, you just need to find them and having current RN experience will work to your advantage. Currently in San Diego, there is a shortage of OR nurses and they are offering transition programs and sign on bonuses to fill those roles.

You can ask to job shadow in the OR. They will then know you and it will be easier to slip in to one of the coveted OR positions.

Many hospitals have internships in the OR. Look for one of those.

Find out from your hospital’s OR department if they offer a postgrad program. It is a program where they train RNs of a different specialty to become OR nurses.
Also, ask the OR manager if you can shadow an OR nurse for a day. This way you’ll be able to see first hand what we do. This will validate if this is really what you want.

Having experience with many nurses who left their current role for a specialty, job shadowing is my number one advice. While you shadow find the person who have been there for a long time, average amount of time, and someone new. Getting various view points will get you a thorough, well rounded picture of what you are walking into.

The answer to the question : regarding a Dialysis RN who wishes to work in the OR.
1. If this RN runs dialysis in a hospital then she can contact her HR and let them know she/he is interested in a change to the OR in their hospital. If that is not a good solution or they run dialysis in a non hospital setting then they can contact the AORN ( Assoc. periOperative RN) group in their area or through their website. According to their website there are more than 40,000+ RN positions in the OR nationwide.

Apply and sell yourself as being very interested in OR and really want to learn - u pick up things easily
If you already work in a hospital - putting in transfers is easier than new job
Dialysis is challenging- find ways u can relate the similarities to a potential employer

Look on the web site associated with governance of the role. That said CNOR, is one of the certifying organizations. They may have jobs listed on the site. Work on an assignment in another state and go to the HR department and ask what you need to do to work in the OR. I went to the Director of the OR in the hospital where I worked and asked when they planned to start another OR training class. I worked in the OR for 25 years after that initial training.

Right now there is a huge need for OR nurses. Many hospitals have residency programs to bring unexperienced nurses into their field. First, look for residency program opportunities. Another avenue is calling the OR manager and setting up a meeting to let them know what your looking for and ask them what you can do to help you get into the OR. Do not rely on a recruiter, they frequently overlook candidates managers wished they knew about. Good luck!

November 29th, 2022

Search out for OR residency programs because they aren’t just geared towards new grads. Most are happy to accept experienced nurses into the program.

I think it will depend on your preferred remote state.Usually the place can be found on the list of the jobs available posted especially for travel nurse or you could ask your employer.

Nursling is the only profession in which a nurse plays multiple roles in multiple specialty weather in hospital or in community so i think it doesn't matters for any nurse who is applying for the position.

I was an OR nurse for 5 years then I switched to ER. Both are fast pace and considered a chaotic normal environment but OR is more structured and controlled, you work with a team. With regard to services I prefer Neuro, cardiac is stressful, General/ GI kinda dirty, vascular is bloody, GU and plastic are boring, if you want closer to your previous job then Kidney transplant or Vascular. But don't get train to more than 2 services you will get used all the time. If you are very competitive and want to get paid more Cardiac or do first assist. OR is not for everybody if very passionate, organize and don't mind all the chaos go ahead and follow your heart. Find a hospital or ambulatory surgery ( usually they don't pay well )willing to train you. Good luck
