Many companies and facilities offer transitions from adult to pediatric nursing. Bayada Home Health Care has a program for transitioning while still being able to work and then allows you to work both areas, if you choose. If you are interested in a specific hospital, put in an application to the pediatric unit and ask about their transition program. Nobody just puts you into a different specialty without advanced training.

I did by going to the PEDs unit manager and asking to cross-train then after training I picked up shifts in PEDs and finally moved to PEDs when a position opened up. PEDs is the most fun unit in all the units I’ve worked in. I also cross-trained in PEDs ICU while working in PEDs. If a hospital values your learning, cross-training will be encouraged. Some hospitals will not allow cross training due to the high probability of losing nurses in particular units with poor management but if they’re smart, they’ll allow it anyway because poorly managed units will eventually lose nurses but in the least, the hospital retains the employee in a different department keeping invaluable experience in the organization.
