From personal experience, I have heard from a few coworkers that gaining experience in the ER can help you get your foot in the door. I'm assuming it's because you frequently place IV's and respond to rapid responses/codes. I was looking to get into IR in the past and from the job postings I've seen, the preferred experience mentions ER. Good luck :)
