PEDIATRICS!! Anywhere in pedi is monumentally more gratifying than my experience on any adult unit. There’s 2 gratifying elements to pedi (off hand): 1: kids heal! They actually get better and it (usually) happens just as fast as it does when they crump! They will skip and bounce down the hall to go home the same healthy and active kiddo as before. 2:teaching frightened, anxious new parents gives a whole new meaning to “patient education”. To explain their child’s illness/infection and see that click of relief to hear reassurance is pretty magical!! There’s no duplicating a worried parent’s laser focus of attention on the RN doing pt education. Every parent will always be a new parent but especially to the oldest at every age/stage.
The bravest of pedi RNs often speak of such magical and glorious experiences in hem/onc. Even when a child is lost they describe such beauty in it! It takes a very strong heart (mine is not so strong) but they say there is no comparison!
All bedside care nursing is rewarding
For me, hospice. But my body is broken and I'm trying to find something that doesn't require hours of driving and lifting/transferring patients alone. Hospice will always be my calling.
