How do you ensure your patient fully understands what to expect before, during, and after their surgery? What resources do you use to help them understand?

When I worked in outpatient surgery, I would ask the patient if they knew what procedure they were going to have. I provided printed materials regarding the procedure and what to expect. Also, I made sure the doctor spoke to the patient and family if family was available so that every answer would be answered and the patient had a clear understanding of what to expect good or bad. I used the teach back method to assure the patients understood all procedures and after care that would take place.
