How can I encourage my patients to use their incentive spirometer post-op?

Tell them that the longer they don’t use it and continue to decline, the longer it will take for them to go home.

Remind them they can’t go home on oxygen. Put the pulse ox where they can see the change. Teach them to use it when the cpox beeps instead of turning up the O2.
Or do options of use it or do laps of the unit, if ambulatory/safe/allowed.

Educate patients on WHY they need to use it...I used to tell my patients to use it during commercials when watching TV. Also it's important to use first thing when waking up....
