What are barriers to effective communication in nursing?

May 13th, 2024

Barriers to effective communication in nursing are numerous. Between patients and nurses, there are language barriers, lack of sufficient time with the patient, perceived lack of caring, just to name a few. Between healthcare providers there is often a lack of clear communication - information is insufficient, nonspecific, and lacking in details. Writing can be difficult to read, although electronic medical records have helped tremendously with this. Healthcare providers need to be on the same page regarding the patient’s plan of care. If they are not, miscommunication occurs and expectations are not met. Between nurses, the communication can be unclear, delegation can be missing specific or complete details, personality conflicts are all possibilities.
