What does the NICU nurse job entail? Looking to change from cardiac to NICU.

Volunteer in a NICU and learn and see if its a fit for you or perhaps you could shadow a nurse in the same hospital you work at if both units are in the hospital. I am a NICU nurse. I go to all deliveries which is always cool and you make a difference by how you make lasting impressions with the way you handle the situation with both the regular births and the NICU births. Parents will never forget that experience, so you have to be aware of how you conduct yourself. I recently started wearing those Happy Birthday necklaces that you get at a party store, to deliveries and I give one to the Father or significant other. It makes them really happy!
When you do care for a NICU baby you care for the entire family. There is much to teach and much for them to learn.

I agree with earlier comment- shadow in NICU to determine if this will be a good fit and worth the transition.
I went from an adult ICU to a NICU - it was a huge culture shock !!! But in the end so very worthwhile .
As a NICU nurse u are very involved in family dynamics - parents need a lot of support and education as they learn to be a family unit with a preemie ( or other neonatal issues)
