Hi, I am a new grad, an international nurse, and English is my second language. I am really nervous about giving a job interview, any advice for me?
Just be honest with your goals and know nursing is about helping everyone and giving of yourself. It’s a rewarding job that does take sacrifices
Be sincere and honest but always let them know you're always ready to learn .Answer the questions being asked .Don't give too much info nor related to the question.
Do not complicate your answers. Stick to your strengths. Be clear and straight to the point.
Find a hospital that services a community that is similar to your skill sets. I have instructed students who are (ESL - English as second language). The road is a little more difficult but as you learn the language and provide therapeutic communication to staff and patients, the job becomes easier.
Decide on what area of nursing you are planning to work in and focus on learning and memorizing as many of the English words that are common and applicable for that specialty before scheduling any job interview in the US. It seems like that effort would be well worth your time and boost your confidence going into an interview for the job you're seeking. Often times you only get one shot to interview for a specific job; but, if the interviewer can't comprehend your answers to questions, there's likely no chance you'd get hired, as staff, and especially your patients ,need to be be able to clearly understand your communications as a nurse. That being said, if your primary language is for example, Spanish, that could be extremely welcomed in a state/city close to the Mexican border or a community with a lot of Spanish speaking residents. And if it's another less common language in the US, like French or German, use the internet to try and locate a city with a large constituent of foreign patients that speak your primary language, You'd be warmly welcomed as a bilingual nurse in those situations and you'd truly be a blessing to not only the patients but all the hospital staff who are not bilingual. Best of luck to you!!
